- Story Text: Hundreds of Bangladeshi people from different social organisations took to the streets to mark International Human Rights Day in Dhaka on Saturday (December 10), focusing on the plight of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.
They were protesting against human rights violations in Myanmar and called on international organisations to stand up for the Rohingyas.
Protesters criticised Aung San Suu Kyi and her government for not doing anything for the Rohingyas, while calling on the Bangladeshi government to allow the refugees to enter the country in the name of humanity.
"The slogan for today's International Human Rights day that is stand up for someone's rights. But it is very unfortunate that what the brutal and cruel human rights violations is going on in Myanmar by state patronization as no one is standing for them. I humbly request to the United Nations, request OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) and all international organizations, not only the former secretary general of U.N., rather the present and existing secretary of the United Nations, OIC and many other organizations should come forward and visit, make fact findings team for Myanmar and stand beside those people," said Mohammad Shahjahan, the secretary general of the Bureau of Human Rights in Bangladesh.
At least 86 people have been killed and 22,000 have fled to Bangladesh since the beginning of an army operation in the area.
Soldiers have poured into the area along Myanmar's border with Bangladesh and sealed it off in response to attacks by what the government has described as Muslim militants on border posts on Oct. 9 that killed nine police officers.
Of more than 150,000 people who had been getting aid before the onset of the violence, only about 20,000 people have got any since Oct. 9, under a partial resumption of deliveries, but some 130,000 have not been reached, the United Nations said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
