- Story Text: A Turkish fighter jet on a training mission crashed before landing near an airport in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir on Monday (December 12), Turkey's military said, adding that the pilot ejected and was unharmed.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known and an investigation was launched, the army said in a statement.
The plane crashed in an empty field and there were no casualties, security sources said. Helicopters were scanning the area for any unexploded ordnance 3-4 kilometres away from the airport where the jet crashed.
Commercial flights to Diyarbakir's civilian airport, adjacent to the military base, were rerouted to nearby airports, sources said.
Diyarbakir is home to a major military air base. Military planes regularly take off from the base to carry out air strikes against Kurdish militant targets in northern Iraq. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
