- Story Text:The acting president of Gambia's Bar Association, Sheriff Marie Tambadou, called on the nation's judiciary on Monday (December 12) to boycott the courts until outgoing President Yahyah Jammeh steps down.
Addressing the media at a hotel in Serekunda, near the capital Banjul, Tambadou accused Jammeh of destabilising the country by rejecting the election results and presenting a petition to the Supreme Court to have them annulled.
"We, the Gambia Bar Association, reject subsequently... we reject the subsequent statement by the APRC (ruling Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction-ruling party) that it intends to file an election petition against the results published by the independent electoral commission. The rhetoric of the APRC further compounds the illegitimate and destabilising actions of the outgoing president," Tambadou said.
The United Nations Security Council on Monday discussed Jammeh's refusal to step down, with U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power later describing the situation in the West African country as "very dangerous".
The 15-member Security Council condemned the move on Saturday (December 10), calling for all parties to refrain from violence, and was briefed behind closed doors on the situation on Monday by U.N. political affairs chief Jeffrey Feltman.
A delegation led by Liberia's President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of heads of state and members of ECOWAS, the African Union and the U.N., were due to meet with Jammeh on Tuesday (December 13).
Gambia's president-elect Adama Barrow said on Monday that he was concerned for his safety, because Jammeh had not recognised the election results. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
