- Story Text:U.N. Secretary General-elect Antonio Guterres, who is on a two-day visit to China, met Chinese President, Xi Jinping, and Chinese Premier, Li Keqiang, in Beijing on Monday (November 28).
Earlier in the day, Guterres, who assumes his role on January 1, called for respect for human rights during a press conference with China's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi.
China's leadership has overseen a sweeping crackdown on activists since President Xi Jinping took power, including detaining or imprisoning dozens of rights lawyers in what the government says is the targeting of criminal acts.
China often clashes with U.N. bodies and envoys over the issue of human rights, and was angered last month when the U.N. human rights chief spoke at an award ceremony for a prominent Chinese academic jailed for life two years ago.
Guterres praised China's role in U.N. peacekeeping missions and hot spot diplomacy.
Guterres, 67, will replace Ban Ki-moon, 72, of South Korea. Ban will step down at the end of 2016 after serving two five terms. Guterres was Portugal's prime minister from 1995 to 2002 and U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
