The leader of Argentina's famed human rights group, the Mother of the Plaza de Mayo, mourned on Saturday (November 26) the death of longtime friend and supporter Fidel Castro.
Eighty-seven year-old Hebe de Bonafini, the president of the group, delivered an emotional statement from her office and distributed it on social media.
She remembered Castro as a man of strength and sacrifice who had an advanced vision of the world.
"We love him. He helped us love the Cuban people and we are going to continue to learn from his teachings as we have so often promised. Many times one promises things. I hope we can fulfill them. I know that you will always be Fidel, in our hearts and in our lives. You are one of the indispensable of the world but I ask that from where you are that you don't abandon us," she said, breaking down into tears.
A towering figure of the 20th century and Cold War icon, Castro stuck to his ideology beyond the collapse of Soviet communism and remained widely respected in parts of the world that struggled against colonial rule.
Castro had been in poor health since an intestinal ailment nearly killed him in 2006. He formally ceded power to his younger brother, Raul, two years later.
Raul Castro, 85, appeared on state television on Friday night to announce Fidel's death, 60 years to the day since the two brothers and dozens of supporters left Mexico on a boat to take revolution to Cuba. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
