- Story Text: French conservative primary rivals, winner Francois Fillon and runner-up Alain Juppe, on Sunday (November 27) gathered at the party's election headquarters after their respective victory and concession speeches.
The two former premiers shook hands and vowed to rally behind the centre-right ahead of the May 2017 presidential election.
Fillon, a socially conservative free-marketeer, is now set up on a likely showdown next year with far-right leader Marine Le Pen that the pollsters expect him to win.
"I want to thank Alain Juppe. I want to thank him for the campaign that he ran. I want to thank him for what he is, that is, a statesman. I want to thank him for his words tonight. And as I told him earlier, I repeat, I have a lot of respect for him. And I count on him to help us, for this battle that begins, that I hope will allow us to bring this five-year-term to a close," Fillon told reporters, joking that it was not Juppe who caused the small nose injury he had, but some photographers.
With votes from four-fifths of 10,228 polling stations counted, Fillon, who went into Sunday's second-round run-off as firm favourite, had won over 67 percent of the vote in a head-to-head battle with Juppe. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
