- Story Text: Around 200 protesters gathered outside Britain's parliament on Wednesday (November 23) urging lawmakers to begin the process of leaving the European Union.
The demonstrators, many draped in Union Jack flags, chanted peacefully holding signs asking the Prime Minister Theresa May to invoke Article 50, which formally starts the negotiating process of leaving the bloc.
"We're here to remind our elected representatives the country voted to leave, now get on with it," said Nigel Birrell a Brexit supporter.
"I feel that my democratic rights are being trampled on by the minority of people who didn't vote for Brexit, the minority of people who voted to stay in Europe. The majority of people who voted to leave and we are not being given our democratic right," his wife Ruth said.
Many in the crowd said they were disillusioned and betrayed by the process so far, with Britain yet to begin formal negotiations for leaving the EU.
Mark Childs, dressed in a Union Jack suit said that lawmakers should follow the will of the electorate.
"They were elected by the people to serve the people and they need to realise and respect the wishes of the people who want our Brexit. We want it now, we don't want it in march," he said.
More than 17 million Britons voted on June 23 to separate from the European Union in an In out referendum, with the leave vote winning 51.89% to 48.11%.
In December the Supreme Court will hear the government's challenge to a High Court ruling saying that the government does not have the authority to trigger Article 50 and that lawmakers must approve the move. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
