- Story Text:Police barricades were seen around Macy's flagship store in New York on Wednesday (November 23) as the city made its final preparations for its iconic Thanksgiving Day parade.
Earlier in the month, New York City police reassured residents and tourists that they would be safe attending the parade despite the militant group Islamic State calling on its followers to attack the event with trucks.
Visitors said that they were not concerned about any possible security threats, and said that they would attend the parade.
"I think they have excellent security here, the police are terrific, and I would be surprised if there is any problems. Although, obviously you always have to worry," Sam Weinstein, a visitor from Tampa Florida told Reuters.
Barbara Drook, a visitor from Virginia echoed the sentiment.
"I follow the threats also, because I am in the business of security myself. So I think New York has it handled. Plus I have been watching what they have been doing in the city, the last couple of days when we got here, I think New York City has it covered."
The holiday celebration, featuring enormous balloons shaped like cartoon characters high above Manhattan, is scheduled to be broadcast nationwide the morning of Nov. 24.
Islamic State, in the latest edition of its online magazine Rumiyah, suggested that readers use motor vehicles to kill and injure people.
The article was accompanied by photos of rented moving trucks and of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which the magazine called "an excellent target." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
