- Story Text: Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha led government officials on Tuesday (November 22) in taking an oath and singing the royal anthem to honour late king Bhumibol Adulyadej.
The ceremony which was held at government buildings all over the country also served as a pledge of loyalty to the royal family.
"After I have learnt about all of the things he has done for the people and the country, I respect him even more," said local government official Pornapa Boonluangson at a ceremony held at Bangkok's Metropolitan Administration.
"This event is to remember our late king, our father. We remember his work in the past 70 years. Some of us didn't know much about what he did. Some have just realized how much he did for the people and the country," added Bangkok governor Assawin Kwanmuang.
Thailand will begin building the funeral pyre for late King Bhumibol, who died last month at the age of 88, next year, the government said on Monday (November 21), adding 8,000 people will be involved in the cremation ceremony.
Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has made clear that the king's only son and designated heir, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, will inherit the throne, though there is still no date for when he will officially succeed his father. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
