- Story Text: Russian Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday (November 23) held talks with President of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer who arrived in Moscow for a three-day visit.
Lavrov and Maurer discussed humanitarian situation in Syria and Ukraine.
Lavrov underlined long-term cooperation between Russia and ICRC and "impartial, honest, depoliticized character of the ICRC activities".
Maurer said that "the impact of these conflicts risks to destabilize further international relations and therefore it is important that we have an opportunity to define cooperation which works against these destabilising effects of the conflicts."
He was expected to travel to Russia in a bid to secure access to civilians in Aleppo. Hundreds of people have been killed this week in a concerted push by the government and its allies to quash resistance in the rebel-held eastern part of Aleppo and re-establish control over what was once Syria's biggest city.
Maurer is expected to meet Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday (November 24) and fly on to Washington and Tehran afterwards. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
