- Story Text:The "third man" in a tight primary to pick the French conservatives' presidential candidate was among the first candidates to vote on Sunday (November 20).
Former prime minister Francois Fillon has benefited from a late surge in the polls, disrupting a race which looked set to be fought between ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy and one of his ministers Alain Juppe.
The second round between the two top-placed candidates will take place on November 27.
Polls show that whoever wins is likely to face the far-right's Marine Le Pen in the second round of the presidential election in May 2017, and is well-placed to win. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
