- Story Text:A wide array of cute and colourful birds from around the world were on display at an annual bird exhibition in the Jordanian capital Amman.
From canary and zebra birds to parrots, more than hundreds of bird species were present at the one-day event, organised by the Jordanian Society of Pet Birds.
The exhibition, on Friday (November 18) was a chance for birds to be bought and sold but also for people to pick up supplies for their pets.
"The importance of this exhibition is twofold. Firstly there is a kind of exchange among the ones who work in this field (pet birds), including vendors who are either independent retailers or wholesalers. And in addition it is for the benefit of people who want to raise birds in their houses, they will find many options either in the quality of the bird they want or the products and necessities for these birds," said bird specialist Mohammad Zeyadah, who was involved in organising the event.
The birds were on sale for between 6 and 5,000 Jordanian dinars (8.5 - 7070 USD).
Some of the colourful creatures were imported from abroad, including from the Netherlands, Australia and Belgium.
Participant Saeed Msameh said the exhibition showed that Jordan had an ornamental bird industry that could compete with those around the world.
"We believe that through these exhibitions we make the local community, the world and the region aware that there is in Jordan an advanced level in pet birds, and we can through them compete at the regional or international level in the coming days and coming years," he said.
Around 100 businesses and shopkeepers participated in this year's exhibition. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
