- Story Text: Nearly 600 demonstrators marched through the streets of Paris on Saturday (November 19) to protest against U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who they say will threaten their civil and human rights.
Organised by the group "Paris Against Trump", Americans living in the French capital gathered with other residents to express their discontent which they wrote on signs like "Dump Trump" or "Don't grab my uterus", referring to a 2005 recording that came to light in which the real-estate mogul boasted in vulgar terms about trying to have sex with a married woman and groping women.
Protester Betsy, who came with two of her friends, said she was worried about Trump's plans for women's rights and the rights of Muslims in the United States.
"Donald Trump is threatening women's reproductive rights, he's threatening the well-being of Muslims and Muslims' families and so much more and we don't approve of it," she said.
Since Trump's surprise victory, thousands of demonstrators in several cities have decried the Republican's campaign promises to restrict immigration and register Muslims, as well as allegations that the former reality-TV star sexually abused women.
"I'm here today not necessarily to protest against the people who voted for Trump because I come from a very conservative area of the United States and a lot of my family members back home were of that pool," said protester Jessie.
"I do want to firmly make a stand against the ideologies I feel like it condones and I want to make sure that, moving forward America only becomes a more inclusive and diverse society, upholding the rights of women, homosexuals and any other repressed group of society," she added.
The demonstrations in the U.S. since the election have been impromptu affairs, quickly organized by young Americans with a diverse array of backgrounds and agendas shared by people like Melanie, who resides in Paris.
"It was important for me to come today. I'm American and absolutely against the Trump presidency, mostly because it does not represent at all the America that I've defended for long and notably with its values of diversity and welcoming people from around the world," she said.
Protesters marched peacefully holding their signs high and chanting slogans like "Hey hey ho ho Trump has got to go!" under police presence. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
