- Story Text: The International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Disciplinary Commission will consider sanctions in doping cases from the Beijing Games, including those of the silver and bronze medallists from Belarus in the men's hammer.
The International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Disciplinary Commission is meeting in Lausanne on Sunday (September 21) to examine doping cases from the Beijing Games and to consider whether sanctions should be given.
The cases discussed will include investigations of the Belorussian hammer throwers Vadim Devyatovskiy and Ivan Tsikhan, respectively silver and bronze medallists from the Beijing Games.
Both athletes tested positive for traces of testosterone after the hammer final on August 17. If the Disciplinary Commission finds them guilty of doping, they will be disqualified and stripped of their medals.
"It will depend on the difficulty of the case, if we feel we can make a decision, otherwise we'll just report to the Executive Board and make recommendations", IOC member of the Disciplinary Commission Denis Oswald told journalists before entering the meeting.
If the athletes are stripped of their medals, Devyatovskiy's silver will go to Krisztian Pars of Hungary, while Japan's Koji Murofushi will get Tsikhan's bronze.
31-year-old Devyatovskiy faces a lifetime ban if found guilty of a second doping offence, while it would a first infraction for 32-year-old Tsikhan. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
