- Story Text: Alberto Contador is welcomed in his hometown of Pinto near Madrid after winning the 2007 Tour de France.
Some two thousand fans of Tour de France winner Alberto Contador gathered in the central plaza of Pinto, a dormitory town outside Madrid, to welcome him home on Monday evening (July 30).
Contador was ushered onto the town hall balcony where he dedicated his triumph to friends and neighbours of his hometown by saying that morsels of of his victory were for everybody who was there below.
"Many thanks. The truth is that for all of you who are here, a little bit of this victory is for all of you," Alberto Contador.
Earlier in the day hundreds of fans mobbed Contador as he arrived at Madrid airport. More fans cheered as he was greeted by the president of the regional government of Madrid in the centre of the city before the drive to Pinto.
Spanish media reported that Alberto Contador's victory in a Tour de France marred by doping scandals meant the start of a new, cleaner, era for cycling. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
