- Story Text: Duffy, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Sex Pistols, Neil Diamond, Nick Cave, John Fogerty, The Arctic Monkeys, Motorhead... the MOJO Honours List for 2008 goes on, with music legends and stars across a range of genres and generations attending the music magazine's 5th annual award show on Monday (June 16, 2008).
Welsh newcomer, singer-songwriter Duffy, whose music career has sky rocketed this year, scooped the Song Of The Year Award for her chart topping single 'Mercy'.
"Being here is so amazing," she said. "It's just all been a bit crazy and I'm enjoying the music, I get to play to big crowds. I'm getting used to it, you know, slowly but surely and - yeah - I'm enjoying the music."
Despite Duffey's explosion on to the music scene, the Best Breakthrough Act went to the 'The Last Shadow Puppets' duo Alex Turner and Miles Kane.
Although 'The Last Shadow Puppets' has been receiving more and more acclaim, Turner and Kane insist it isn't detracting from their other bands.
Turner fronts 'The Arctic Monkeys' and Kane, 'The Rascals'.
"No, come on, you can have both," said Turner "Best of both worlds, as one once said," added Kane.
Best Album Award went to 'Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' for their latest offering 'Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!' Cave, who has in the past voiced his discomfort with music awards in general, said he makes an exception for the MOJO's.
"The MOJO Awards, I always find, are a little different. They're a little more interested in music and-- rather than what's kind of the 'current thing' It seems to be a little more... They just seem to be better," he told Reuters.
The MOJO Classic Songwriter Award went to music icon Neil Diamond.
"Never, never," he said, when asked if all the award shows over his more than four decade career have become a bit of a blur. "It's always nice to be recognised by your peers when you get an award. I f I get an award I'll be very, very happy to accept."
The band whose name has become synonymous with progressive rock, 'Genesis,' were awarded The MOJO Lifetime Achievement Award. A sold out reunion tour last year proved the band have remained as popular as ever, but frontman Phil Collins said that if there are any collaborations in the future, they'll be playing down the old associations.
"Maybe we will, but we'd try our best not to call it 'Genesis' and we'd try our best to do something that was just for us" he explained.
"It's very difficult, I mean it's very difficult to sort of -- if we call it Genesis, it's sort of: 'New Genesis record, well, it better be good,' whereas all we want to do is write a bit of music."
Other's honoured included one of Britain's most influential heavy metal bands 'Motorhead', with band founder Lemmy accepting the MOJO Hero award. John Fogerty of 'Credence Clearwater Revival' took home MOJO's Inspiration Award.
Led Zeppelin were awarded MOJO Best Live Act after their massive reunion concert last year.
