- Date: 21st June 2006
- Summary: NEW YORK, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES (JUNE 20, 2006) (REUTERS) (SOUNDBITE) (English) NELLY FURTADO SAYING: "I, in my career, have always felt that if people either love you or hate you, it's great. Apathy is the area you don't want to get into in the music business. You want people to be passionate about you, even if it's a passion where they're angry at you. I think if some of my fans are a little bit upset with the new album, it's okay. I think they might buy it anyway and just kind of listen and it will grow on them, and maybe they'll learn something new."

- Story Text: While having a child brings out the soft side of many female singers, motherhood has had the opposite effect on Nelly Furtado; her new album 'Loose' introduces the world to a sexier, bolder, and more hip-hop version of the Grammy Award-winning Canadian pop star.
Furtado's first new single, the urban-based 'Promiscuous,' is making a heavy impact on radio, retail and the digital world. The song and its video feature Furtado with a "new" urban sound and sexier image; most of which, according to Furtado, has come about thanks to her two-year-old daughter, Nevis. Furtado claimed that having a baby ignited her with a new sense of self and, more importantly, a surge of energy. So don't expect this new mom to start recording lullabies.
"I've never done things in a straight forward way. For me, motherhood has inspired a whole new sexiness in me. It really has. After I gave birth to my beautiful daughter, I felt more curvaceous. I felt more proud of my body. I recorded this album in Miami, Florida where I got to have the best of both worlds: by day, I was making sandcastles at the ocean with Nevis, my daughter, and at night I was cutting this hot album with Timbaland," said Furtado.
Furtado, who rose to fame with the 2000 pop hit 'I'm Like a Bird,' collaborated on the majority of the album with hip-hop uber-producer Timbaland, most known for his work with artists like Missy Elliot and Justin Timberlake. Furtado expected to produce two songs with Timbaland, but their collaboration went so well she emerged with 10 tracks.
"We had so much fun in the studio. I can't explain; it was like an explosion. Literally, the first day Tim and I worked together, we were jamming so loud and hard we didn't realize, but we suddenly went, what's that smell? We looked at the speaker and it was burning and a flame came out because the volume was so loud. So that was like an omen that is really hot. This is exciting," said Furtado.
But not everyone is in love with Furtado's new sound and image. Much has been written, especially in music blogs, about Furtado selling out to a more accessible sound and cover-girl image. But she doesn't let the criticism get to her.
"I, in my career, have always felt that if people either love you or hate you, it's great!" Furtado said. "Apathy is the area you don't want to get into in the music business. You want people to be passionate about you, even if it's a passion where they're angry at you. I think if some of my fans are a little bit upset with the new album, it's okay. I think they might buy it anyway and just kind of listen and it will grow on them, and maybe they'll learn something new."
'Loose' is now available in stores, and for fans in the mood to experience the new sexy Furtado live in-person, she has a tour booked in Canada and Japan and is lining up North and South American festivals for late summer and fall. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
