You can make a movie out of your impression of a novel. Novels, when they're good, are too dense and complex and intricate and articulate to ever be made into a movie, so you just make the director's impression and Joe had a wonderful impression of it."

- Story Text: It was a true British invasion on Thursday (November 10) as the cast of "Pride and Prejudice" marked the film's U.S. debut. Already a major success in the United Kingdom, "Pride and Prejudice" stars Keira Knightley, and includes such notables as Donald Sutherland and Brenda Blethyn.
The media mobbed Knightley as she walked the red carpet at New York City's Loew's Theater. Dressed chicly in Calvin Klein, the 20-year-old British actress smiled and posed for paparazzi.
Knightley said she hoped the movie would be as big of a success in the U.S. as it has been in the UK.
"I really hope so. It's an absolutely beautiful movie and I think for the holidays, we all need a bit of romance and this is the classic romance. So yeah, I think people will at least like it, if not love it," she said.
Many critics say Knightley's portrayal of Jane Austen's immortal character, Elizabeth, should earn her an Academy Award nomination. But Knightley doesn't let Oscar talk go to her head.
"Well that would be nice. I don't know. I made a film that I'm really proud of. People like it; you can't ask for anything more than that. Anything else would be a supreme bonus, but I'm happy as is," Knightley said.
Starring as Knightley's on-screen father, actor Donald Sutherland remarked that it's never easy to turn classic literature into film. But, he explained, director Joe Wright did the novel justice.
"You can't make a novel. You can't make a movie out of a novel. You can make a movie out of your impression of a novel. Novels, when they're good, are too dense and complex and intricate and articulate to ever be made into a movie, so you just make the director's impression and Joe had a wonderful impression of it," said Sutherland.
While some actors may worry about taking the role of such a beloved character, Matthew Macfadyen had no qualms about playing Knightley's on-screen love, Mr. Darcy.
"No it's a treat, it's nice. And I'm in good company. There's a lot of nice actors that did it before and it's a great script, fantastic cast, great director. It makes the job easier," Said Macfadyen.
While the movie as a whole is getting rave reviews, Knightley is shining from the rest of the cast as the tour-de-force of "Pride and Prejudice."
Actress Brenda Blethyn joked that she may be slightly jealous. "I think she's wonderful in it, don't you? She's 20 years old. For goodness sake. She's beautiful and she's talented as well. She carries the film. She's practically in every scene," she said.
