- Story Text: One person drowned in floods that swept the eastern Turkey town of Dogubeyazit on Thursday (September (10), state-run Anatolian news agency has reported.
The man who died was trying to cross a flooded road.
Heavy rain that lasted for about 45 minutes had caused local rivers to flood main streets in the town.
Thirty one people died in floods in northwestern Turkey after two days of the heaviest rain in 80 years, official sources reported on Wednesday (September 9).
Twenty-six people died in Istanbul, Turkey's largest city with 14 million inhabitants, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said late on Wednesday.
Another five died in Saray, west of Istanbul, reportedly all from the same family.
Nine more were missing, Erdogan said.
Witnesses said waves of muddy waters pulling cars, trees and debris crashed into homes and buildings early on Wednesday.
The waters began to recede late on Wednesday revealing wrecked buildings and debris scattered across the streets, as distressed residents and workers started the clean-up.
Interior Minister Besir Atalay said the death toll could rise as waters continued to recede. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
