- Story Text: A United Nations envoy meets DR Congolese rebel leader Laurent Nkunda for talks to seek peace in eastern DR Congo.
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was appointed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to try to end the conflict in east Democratic Republic of Congo, met rebel leader Laurent Nkunda on Sunday (November 16) for talks to seek peace.
Escorted by Indian peacekeepers, Obasanjo flew in by helicopter to Jomba, not far from the borders with Rwanda and Uganda, where he greeted Nkunda with a hug.
After the talks Nkunda told Reuters:
"And I think, as I was telling you that we are expecting many things from Obasanjo. Let us say that the peace is coming and the suffering is going to stop."
Obasanjo, who held talks on Saturday (November 15) with DR Congolese President Joseph Kabila, is seeking to prevent the fighting in North Kivu from escalating into a repeat of a wider 1998-2003 DR Congo war that pulled in neighbouring states. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
