- Story Text: United Nations Secretary General received the Legion of honour from French President Francois Hollande on Thursday (November 17) during his farewell visit to France.
During the ceremony, Hollande said he was assigning the award to Ban party due the contributions he made towards the Paris climate change accord.
"And it was largely because of your contribution, because many years ago you started putting this topic on all the agendas that you could and not only at the UN general Assembly," he said.
The Legion of Honour was established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte and is considered to be one of France's highest civilian awards.
"By doing this you are rewarding our honourable organisation and I feel deeply honoured and proud. From the bottom of my heart and in the name of the UN I thank you," Ban said during the ceremony.
Ban will hand over the reins of the United Nations to Antonio Guterres on January 1 after 10 years at the helm of the 193-member world organisation. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
