- Story Text:The Real Madrid Foundation and Cuba's National Institute for Sport, Physical Education and Recreation, INDER, this week opened a soccer training camp in Havana for Cuban children.
The camp is aimed at around 100 children and teachers from five primary schools located in the Cuban capital.
On Wednesday (November 16), Emilio Butragueno, retired player and Real Madrid's director of international relations, visited the Centro Deportivo Eduardo Saborit, the headquarters of the camp, which opened on Monday (November 14). He took part in a training session with a group of Cuban children.
Katherine, was thrilled to take part in the training session.
"And look, it's a great opportunity for us (to meet Brutagueno). We're getting to know him and our favourite team is Real Madrid," she said.
Butragueno, who was a Real Madrid striker, was twice given the Bronze Ball in 1986 and 1987 and included in FIFA's list of 100 best players in history.
Divided into subgroups, the Cuban youngsters went out to the field to exchange balls with the former star, who hopes that this experience will open doors for other exchanges between the Real Madrid Foundation and INDER.
"During the game, one improves dealing with others, learns to win, learns to lose, has to maintain discipline, respect for colleagues, for the coach. That is where we want to focus on and for the future, we would like to have many more projects and we will advance on that. We wanted to see that we could succeed here. I think this week has already been very positive," Brutagueno said.
Real Madrid becomes the first football club in the world to undertake educational projects through sport on the island.
The Foundation hopes to transmit to Cuban children not only an interest in perfecting the technique of sport, but also essential values in the practice of soccer such as leadership, effort, self-control, teamwork and respect for the rival.
"I wanted to play with someone famous, with someone who would tell me: 'You're the one.' I feel happy about what happened. This is, as I said before, a unique experience," said ten-year- old Ibrahim who dreams of being a soccer star.
Real Madrid said on its website that the foundation aims to promote soccer, with a clear focus on the role it has to play in the individual and social development of the Cuban population. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
