- Story Text: Togo and Ghana took first place in respectively the men's and the women's zonal African Volleyball Championship finals over the weekend. The competition was held in Togo's capital, Lome.
Togo's men's national team beat Nigeria 3 sets to 2 in a gruelling match.
Togolese player Adje Agnitey said he was pleased with the tournament.
"There is growing solidarity behind this tournament. There are several strong teams who come here as competitors. The tournament is beginning to take off and the final was really up to public expectations. I am very happy, very happy to play against a team like that of Nigeria," he said.
Ghana's women's team took an easy win over Burkina Faso winning all three sets.
Mary Adday from the Ghanaian team put the win down to good preparation and training.
"We have our training and trained well because we know we come to meet them. We know we are coming to play finals, so we play the finals and we win," she said.
The championships drew national teams from Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Mali Ghana, Niger and the hosts Togo.
Organizers of the tournament said they aim to promote volleyball in the region and strengthen the bonds between the youth across the participating countries.
"The 16th edition of this tournament has shown that we are making progress everytime we actually hold this competition. You can see that through the Togo team, the Nigerian team and the Niger team. I can say that the teams that were struggling have managed to catch up compared to teams that were ahead," said Issiaka Sawadogo, president of West Africa's zone 3 for the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB).
Coaches, technical directors and referees also recently attended several training sessions led by two French trainers from the Ligue d'Alsace, a top Volleyball league in France.
Organizers put on the workshop to try and raise the level of volleyball coaching in West Africa.
Next year, Ghana will host the 17th edition of the zonal African Volleyball Championship tournament. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
