- Story Text: At least 7 are dead as Mount Merapi erupts again and people from surrounding villagers flee volcanic ash and mud.
Rescue team combing through villages on the slopes of Mount Merapi in Java early on Friday (November 5) found six bodies in a single house, which brings the death toll to 51 after the volcano blasted ash and gas as high as eight kilometers into the sky, forcing more than 80,000 to flee their homes.
Refugees covered in ash and grey volcanic mud gathered in a stadium in Yogyakarta as inhabitants of the city, their faces covered with masks, left the city.
"People were gathered at my house, when the eruption occurred we started to panic. The Police brought us here. I was so afraid," Dwi Susanti told Reuters as she nursed her infant.
"My house burnt down and it's very dark up there," said another villager, Ahmad Sutarji.
Sardjito hospital in Yogyakarta was receiving burn victims as the safety exclusion zone was extended to 20 kms around the mountain from 15kms on Thursday.
Heavy rain also lashed the area, cooling flows of lava that were encroaching into some abandoned villages on the slopes of the volcano near Yogyakarta, the cultural heart of Java island. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
