It will make oxygen for people to breathe and it will supply it's own water by sucking in the Martian atmosphere which is 100% humid most nights and pull out water of a very simple dehumidifier mechanism. So, you'll have 3D printer which will make almost everything that you need from plates to wrenches to whatever you need, toothbrushes, whatever you need in your life." We have so many conveniences on earth that make our life very simple and very easy and living on Mars will be a challenge at the very least. So, you're going to need a place like this to keep you alive. You can't breathe the air. You have far too much radiation that you have to be protected against and it's far too cold there. So, you need some place like this to survive." So, you have to have a 3D printer so that you can make anything that you need. You have to have a machine called 'Moxy' that makes oxygen out of the Mars atmosphere. You have to have 'wavar' that makes water for you to drink. All of your food is going to arrive freeze dried from earth, we have a few plants here and you could grow things like lettuce that are very easy to grow and will provide a psychological crunch in your mouth." PETRANEK LOOKING THROUGH WINDOW PETRANEK STANDING BY DOOR (SOUNDBITE) (English) AUTHOR, STEPHEN PETRANEK, SAYING: "Well, it's possibly the greatest adventure of anyone's lifetime to go that far and see something so unusual and to live in an environment that is so unusual but there will be a camaraderie about living on Mars that will be very attractive. Salaries on Mars will likely be higher than they are on earth. There will be jobs on Mars galore. People will be very, very necessary to create an economy on Mars and Mars will have to be self-sustaining." PETRANEK WALKING INTO SHOW HOME (SOUNDBITE) (English) AUTHOR, STEPHEN PETRANEK, SAYING: "There are plants up here. It will be very important to grow a certain amount of your own food. It will be a small percentage, probably only about 20% of what you eat but it will have tremendous psychological value. And there's some psychological, because people like to have crunch, in their mouths - so, you'll grow lettuce and salad and things. Mars will be pretty much a vegetarian diet." - Story Text:A show home with features to survive life on Mars went on display in London on Thursday (November 10), offering visitors a glimpse of what setting up shop on the red planet could look like if it ever happens.
Set amongst a mock-up of Mars' red soil at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, the pod-like construction has room for a bed, desk with a computer, space to grow plants as well as exercise.
It was designed with consultation from astronomers at the observatory and "How We'll Live On Mars" author Stephen Petranek, who was also a consultant on the upcoming National Geographic docu-drama "MARS". The six-part series is set in 2033 and follows the first manned mission to Mars.
"This is a typical Mars home if you want to call it that but it's really a survival centre. It will make oxygen for people to breathe and it will supply it's own water by sucking in the martian atmosphere which is 100% humid most nights and pull out water of a very simple dehumidifier mechanism. So, you'll have 3D printer which will make almost everything that you need from plates to wrenches to whatever you need, toothbrushes, whatever you need in your life," said Petranek.
Petranek also said there is are numerous reasons to find leaving earth and going to live on the red planet appealing.
"Well, it's possibly the greatest adventure of anyone's lifetime to go that far and see something so unusual and to live in an environment that is so unusual but there will be a camaraderie about living on Mars that will be very attractive. Salaries on Mars will likely be higher than they are on earth. There will be jobs on Mars galore. People will be very, very necessary to create an economy on Mars and Mars will have to be self-sustaining."
