A new French graphic novel has attempted to reconstruct the November 13, 2015 Paris attacks, a year after they shook the French capital and the wider world.
"13/11 - Reconstruction of an Attack", uses stark, black-and-white comic strips to depict the events as told by Arab world specialist Anne Giudicelli.
Its release on November 2 marks the first graphic novel to be written by Giudicelli, founder of the Terr(o)RISC think-tank specialising in issues related to international extremism.
Accompanied by illustrations by artist Luc Brahy, Giudicelli's text attempts to show that the attacks highlight a link between French military intervention in Syria and its impact on French soil.
Beginning with the arrival in Europe of the prime surviving suspect for the November 2015's Paris attacks, Salah Abdeslam, the comic increases pace to a fraught minute-by-minute artist's vision of the gun and bomb attacks that killed 130.
Giudicelli, who told Reuters it was an "investigative work" involving months of research, interviews and fieldwork, said that they had worked hard to portray the "synchronicity" of events as they unfolded.
"[W]e tried to recreate that, even where it is second after second. There are an enormous amount of events in a very short time," she said on Thursday (November 10).
The graphic novel has hit shelves while France is still struggling to come to terms with the deadly attacks, one year on.
The 130 victims died when groups of gunmen and suicide bombers attacked the perimeter of the Stade de France sports stadium, the Bataclan and a string of six restaurants: La Belle Equipe, Le Petit Cambodge, Le Carillon, Café Bonne Bière, la Casa Nostra, and le Comptoir Voltaire, where Brahim Abdeslam, brother of living suspect Salah Abdeslam, blew himself up.
Responsibility for the killings was claimed by the Islamic State group, which has called on its followers to attack France due to its involvement in military operations against the group in Iraq and Syria. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
