- Story Text: Musical concert in Oman's al-Felaij castle is staged in memory of legendary Egyptian singer Abdel-Halim Hafez.
A musical group that specialises in reproducing songs by legendary Arab singers performed for an audience at Oman's Felaij Castle theatre in the town of Barkaa.
The Hefni music group sang a collection of songs by one of the most popular Arab singers in history, Egyptian Abdel-Halim Hafez.
Ratiba Al-Hefni, the founder of the Egyptian music group, said the concert in Oman was a tribute to the singer and his originality.
"Abdel-Halim Hafez is a wonderful personality, he was a romantic and he took a new approach in an era that had Um Kulthoum, Abdel-Wahab and Fareed al-Atrash. He came through in his youth, had his own style and insisted to stay true to his colours and not imitate others," she said, in reference to other prominent artists in his generation.
Born in 1929, the singer's career began at 20 and his music still proves popular across the Arab world, especially with the older generation.
Hafez died in London's King's College Hospital in 1977 after struggling with a long illness at the age of 47. He was a popular singer, especially with female fans and his funeral was one of the largest held in Egypt.
