- Story Text: Iraqis from the Intisar neighbourhood in eastern Mosul who fled Islamic State militants said on Friday (November 11) they had had a days-long wait for transport to refugee camps.
Hundreds of civilians are gathered in the Shahrezad district, now behind the Iraqi army's frontline.
"There are families that are fleeing the clashes and strikes perpetrated by Daesh, these families have been in the desert for three days, without water, food or cars. We are waiting for the trucks to transport us to refugee camps, to the safe areas," said Waqqas Ibrahim, using an Arabic acronym for the militants.
Another man, Ibrahim Abdullah, said: "We escaped from the strikes, Daesh strikes. We could no longer live in our home, so we have been out here for a few days. We want cars to transport us to the camps, we want to find shelter."
Thousands of people have left Mosul since Iraq's regular troops and special forces - along with Shi'ite militias, Kurdish Peshmerga fighters and other groups launched their campaign to retake the city nearly three weeks ago.
So far 31,000 people have been displaced, of whom more than 3,000 have already returned to their homes, according to the International Organization for Migration. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
