- Date: 11th November 2016
- Summary: BRUSSELS, BELGIUM (FILE - MARCH 19, 2016) (REUTERS) SIGN FOR STREET WHERE ABDESLAM WAS ARRESTED On November 18, heavy gunfire was heard in an eyewitness video, as police raided a building thought to contain suspects linked to the Paris attacks. Two assailants were killed in the assault, including a woman who detonated a suicide bomb. The target of the raid, which filled the streets of St Denis with heavily armed police and soldiers, was Islamic State militant Abdelhamid Abaaoud, who was initially thought to have orchestrated the Paris attacks from Syria. Abaaoud was killed after the police raid. Another main suspect, Salah Abdeslam, whose brother was one of the suicide bombers in the attacks on November 13, had been the subject of an international arrest warrant. The French National Police launched an appeal for witnesses on November 15 for a Belgian they said was suspected of being implicated in the Paris attacks on Friday. The pictures show Abdeslam at a petrol station near the Belgian border with Hamza Attou, suspected of driving Abdeslam to Brussels the day after the attacks, who was later arrested by Belgian police. Attou and another man, Mohamed Amri, were pulled over with Abdeslam on a motorway near the border on November 14 without being detained. Abdeslam was arrested by special intervention police in a raid in the Molenbeek area of Brussels on March 18, following a shootout. He was extradited to France from Belgium in April, and has refused to speak to a judge.
