- Story Text: Thousands of New Yorkers took to the streets of the city on Saturday (November 12) to protest the election of Donald Trump.
Chanting "not my president" and holding colorful signs, protesters set out at midday from a farmer's market at the city's Union Square toward Trump's home-base, Trump Tower.
"I'm here because I'm on pain. I just want to express myself that, I just can't believe that this happened. I mean it did happen, and I've heard a number of the commentaries that explain why, but never the less it's very painful," Janice Test, a protester from Philadelphia told Reuters.
"I came out here to send a message to all the people that Donald Trump targeted during his presidential campaign, every single group that he plans to go after, send a message that we stand together, we stand united, and we are going to resist his racist, sexist policies," said Tranh Eng, a New Yorker.
"We're not tolerant of some president coming and telling us, 'You don't belong here', yes we do. This is how this land was founded. People come from different places, they come, they find a happiness here, and they stay here. We can't tolerate him telling us we don't belong here, and that's not fair, that's not America," said Kicha Guerch, a New York Muslim originally from Morocco.
Rallies were scheduled throughout the day in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, where organizers said they hoped to continue the momentum after several nights of demonstrations triggered by the real-estate mogul's surprise win in Tuesday's (November 8) presidential election.
The demonstrations so far have been largely peaceful, although in Portland protesters have smashed store windows, sprayed graffiti and damaged cars as they clashed with police who used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds.
Some 60.3 million people voted for Trump, fewer than the 60.8 million who cast ballots for former secretary of state HIllary Clinton. But Trump's strong showing in swing states, including Michigan, meant he triumphed in the Electoral College that ultimately picks the president. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
