- Story Text: Dozens of student activists in the Philippines burned paper printouts of Donald Trump on Thursday (November 10) to protest against the U.S..
Trump stunned the world by defeating heavily favoured rival Hillary Clinton in Tuesday's (November 8) presidential election, ending eight years of Democratic rule and sending the United States on a new, uncertain path.
"It doesn't matter who won in their election because there won't be any other result other than the intensified oppression of the people and the plunder of national resources around the world. And now that the racist Donald Trump won, his anti-Muslim, anti-black people and anti-immigrant rhetoric shows that the U.S. will only strengthen its wars of aggression," protester JP Rosas said as the group gathered outside the U.S. embassy in Manila.
Trump's campaign promises have included building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border to stop illegal crossings and to deport the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States.
The Philippines has more than four million immigrants in the U.S., with an estimated 200,000 undocumented Filipino workers, the U.S. State department said.
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who has widely criticised outgoing president Barack Obama for attacking his anti-drug campaign, welcomed Trump's victory even as tensions remain between the countries.
Duterte on Wednesday (November 9) told Filipinos how angry he had been at Washington, saying it had threatened to cut off aid and had treated the Philippines like a dog tied to a post.
Last month Trump told Reuters that the Philippines was a very important strategic location and that Duterte's comments about removing foreign troops showed "a lack of respect for our country." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
