- Story Text:U.S. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Wednesday (November 9) promised to use his business acumen to run the country and vowed to work with other nations as he celebrated winning the White House after sweeping a series of key battleground states and rattling world markets that had expected Democrat Hillary Clinton to defeat the political outsider.
Trump said Clinton called to concede the race to him early on Wednesday as he appeared headed toward a stunning upset of the former secretary of state in a bitter and divisive White House race slamming the door shut on her quest to become the first woman president.
Trump praised the movement that catapulted him to the front of the Republican presidential ticket.
"This was not a campaign but rather an incredible and great movement made up of millions of hard working men and women who love their country and want a better brighter future for themselves and for their family," he said. "The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer."
Trump said he would embark on a large-scale "project of national growth and renewal", putting Americans to work.
"We are going to fix our inner cities and rebuild our highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, schools, hospitals. We're going to rebuild our infrastructure. Which will become, by the way, second to none," Trump said.
"I will harness the creative talents of our people, and we will call upon the best and brightest to leverage their tremendous talent for the benefit of all. It's going to happen. We have a great economic plan. We will double our growth and have the strongest economy anywhere in the world," he added.
With investors worried a Trump victory could cause economic and global uncertainty, investors fled risky assets such as stocks. In overnight trading, S&P 500 index futures fell 5 percent to hit their so-called limit down levels, indicating they would not be permitted to trade any lower until dayside trading resumed on Wednesday morning.
Trump sought to reassure international leaders he would "get along with all other nations willing to get along with us".
"I want to tell the world community that while we will always put America's interests first we will deal fairly with everyone," Trump said.
Republicans also were projected to maintain control of the U.S. House of Representatives, and appeared to be heading toward keeping their majority in the U.S. Senate. If Trump wins the White House, he would have a greater chance of enacting his agenda with a Republican-led Congress.
As the evening wore on, Clinton, 69, acknowledged the unexpectedly close results given her lead in opinion polls going into Election Day.
"This team has so much to be proud of. Whatever happens tonight, thank you for everything," Clinton said on Twitter.
