- Story Text:The European Union on Wednesday (November 9) congratulated Donald Trump on his election as U.S. president, saying it hoped to strengthen transatlantic relations and discuss issues of mutual interest.
"First, the American people expressed themselves clearly in a democratic vote. Second, transatlantic relations are essential to the world and the European Union and the United States will have to continue working closely to preserve and strengthen those and finally, President Juncker looks forward to the opportunity of obtaining more precisions on the new U.S. administration positions on issues of mutual interest like trade, climate, anti-terrorism and security," said the chief spokesperson of European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, Margaritis Schinas.
The leaders of the European Union institutions invited Donald Trump to a summit as soon as he can schedule one and cited security and trade ties as key in a letter sent on Wednesday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
