- Story Text: Africans were mixed in their reactions after Donald Trump stunned the world by defeating heavily favoured Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House on Wednesday (November 9), sending the United States on a new, uncertain path.
A resident from Lagos, Nigeria said the result was a huge shock.
"Whatever happens to America affects everybody and with all these promises of doom by Trump to the blacks, to the Muslims, the minority, so it's not something we're happy about," Ganiu Olukanga said.
"He doesn't want foreigners in America, he doesn't respect women. Personally he's not a stable person - I don't think he's good enough for the presidency," Christopher Ndlovu from South Africa said.
Some Kenyans said Trump's win was positive.
"The Americans have spoken and they have spoken loudly and democracy is taking its course, and I think it's very, very good, that this time round Americans are going to show the whole world that is the kind of democracy that we need," Okumu Osoti said.
Trump's victory set off a tidal wave of selling across emerging markets, taking equities to three-month lows as the Mexican peso led massive currency falls. South Africa's rand dropped as much as four percent on Wednesday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
