- Story Text:The family of one of the two Indonesian women murdered by British former banker Rurik Jutting demanded compensation on Tuesday (November 8) after he was jailed for life for the killings.
Twenty-three-year-old Sumarti Ningsih was found dead in the luxury apartment of Rurik along with fellow Indonesian Seneng Mujiasih, who was 26.
Ningsih's parents welcomed the sentence.
"The verdict is appropriate as the suspect is guilty of premeditated murder. I want to say thank you to the Hong Kong legal system for what they've done and secondly I hope we can get compensation to support Ningsih's son, Muhammad Hafiz Arnovan," Ningsih's father told Reuters at their family home in Indonesia's central Java.
Ningsih, the only income earner in the family until her sudden death left her parents in charge of her seven-year-old son. Now the family earns money with contract farming.
Former Bank of America employee Jutting had denied murdering the women in 2014 but the jury found him guilty.
The jurors rejected his plea of guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility due to alcohol and drug abuse and sexual disorders. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
