- Story Text: Italy is trying to get itself out of a tight spot as thousands of migrants continue to flood to the tiny island of Lampedusa, many from post-revolution Tunisia.
Residents are up in arms about their tourist and fishing island being turned into a mass holding camp for stranded illegal immigrants and the ministry of the interior on Monday (March 28) said it would send 6 transport ships to move them to other parts of Italy.
They are expected to arrive on Wednesday (March 30) and will be dispersed into tented camps on the mainland and in Sicily.
Aid workers are in the port to dispense milk and biscuits to the migrants massed around Lempedusa's port area. Local authorities say 3,700 migrants have arrived in the last few days and that 20,000 have come through Lampedusa since January.
The city of 5,000 has more than doubled as a result of the arrival of the North Africans, most of them young men looking for work in Europe.
The centrist government of Silvio Berlusconi has offered 200 million euros worth of aid and credit to Tunisia to help the country, just 150km (93 miles) away, reinforce its border. Controls put in place by the government of Tunisian president Zine Ben Ali have been relaxed since he was ousted in the revolution at the start of the year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
