- Story Text: Residents of Cuba's eastern city of Baracoa surveyed the damage to homes and neighbourhoods on Friday (October 07) after Hurricane Matthew tore through the area, flattening city blocks.
Downed power lines and debris littered the city as Baracoans picked their way through the mess, trying to salvage what was left from their homes.
"The majority of people lost everything, their homes, everything inside their homes, everything, everything, equipment, food. It was catastrophic," said local, Ania Lopez Sanchez.
Many residents saw out the hurricane in shelters and returned to Baracoa only to find they lost everything.
"Everything was destroyed, everything destroyed. We will see how long things will stay this way," said local, Soraide Espada.
Matthew lashed Cuba on Thursday (October 06), packing gusts of over 100 miles per hour (160 kph) as it tracked towards Florida.
No deaths were reported in Cuba but Baracoa locals are reeling from the loss of their homes.
"There are neighbours who have been left with nothing. They took their belongings off the floor but the sea did not relent. The hurricane was a terrible force," said Julia Belquis, who lost her home.
Hurricane Matthew has already left a lethal imprint on Haiti -- killing more than 800 people and leaving tens of thousands homeless. It is now battering the United States, heading up the Atlantic Coast through Georgia, South Carolina and into North Carolina. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
