- Story Text: German airline TUIfly cancelled all of its 108 flights on Friday (October 7) due to crew members taking sick leave. The subsidy of holiday tour operator TUI announced the cancellations in a statement on Thursday evening (October 6), saying that more flight cancellations were expected over the next days.
Passengers returning to Germany from their holiday destinations were re-directed to other airports, with some of them feeling left alone by the airline.
"In Antalya they told us we would be driven to Cologne by car, our car is parked there and it's where we wanted to go. And the lady here says, there won't be a car, instead we could take the train to Cologne. And of course under these circumstances we don't agree with this," Dieter Mischke said, who returned from his holiday in Turkey. Mischke and his wife only heard about the cancellations in the morning news. "We feel a bit left alone. Especially when you arrive here and no one has a clue how to proceed," he said.
The cancellations come after German airline Air Berlin said on Wednesday (October 5) it had entered discussions with TUI Group and Etihad about a combination of its tourist businesses.
This could result in the combination of the existing tourist business of Air Berlin with 35 aircraft (including 14 aircraft presently wet-leased from TUIfly to Air Berlin group) and the German TUIfly, Air Berlin said in a statement. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
