- Story Text:Barcelona coach Luis Enrique defended his friend and former teammate Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola on Friday (October 28) saying he would bounce back from a winless streak to win trophies.
Former Barça and Bayern Munich coach Guardiola is without a win in six games in all competitions, culminating in Wednesday's (October 26) 1-0 defeat in the EFL Cup to Manchester United, his worst run of results since entering management in 2008.
"To the critics of Guardiola I will say this: don't worry, he's going to win trophies this season. Critics will always appear because people don't like it when the same people win all the time, but I'm sure Pep is going to win, and he's going to win while playing the same spectacular football we saw at the start of the season," Luis Enrique told a news conference on Friday ahead of Barcelona's game against Granada in La Liga.
Barcelona have asked Spain's Court for Sport (TAD) to open disciplinary proceedings against La Liga chief Javier Tebas after he criticised the team's reaction to an empty bottle being thrown in from the stands during a goal celebration last Saturday (October 22) at the Mestalla stadium when they were playing against Valencia. Luis Enrique supported the behavior of his players and the values that the club intends to transmit.
"Year after year we win the 'Fair Play' award because of the values of the club and of the player, playing good football, not kicking the rivals, not injuring other players, these are the values we try to transmit, we are the team less booked by the referee," he said.
This Saturday (October 29) Barca will face Granada, who are managed by new coach Lucas Alcaraz.
"They have had only a few matches with their new coach but the difficulties for us will be the same as always playing at home, we will try to play with the ball the best way possible, generating the opportunities to score," Luis Enrique said.
Granada remain the only team in the league without a win this season. Barcelona, who are currently third in La Liga with 19 points will miss Andres Iniesta, Jordi Alba, Jeremy Mathieu, Gerard Pique and Arda Turan due to injuries. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
