- Story Text: A 70-year-old Australian man accused of molesting children in Bali, Robert Andrew Fiddes Ellis, arrived in court on Tuesday (October 25) ahead of his verdict hearing.
Ellis's verdict hearing and sentencing was postponed by the Denpasar District Court a week ago.
Prosecutors allege the Melbourne-born man lured at least 11 girls to his rented room in Tabanan, near Kuta, with promises of gifts between 2014 and 2015.
Australian media say the girls were aged between eight and 17 years old.
According to the district court, Ellis gave each victim between 100,000 ($8) and 300,000 ($23) Rupiah after returning them to their accommodation.
Ellis has been detained since January this year and faces 16 years in prison if found guilty, according to prosecutors.
Official data on sexual abuse remains scarce in Indonesia where over 90 percent of rape cases go unreported, according to a recent survey by victim support group Lentera Sintas Indonesia.
Bali, a paradise for holidaymakers is a living hell for local children who are at risk of being sexually harassed, activists have warned, as they call for stricter law enforcement to protect the vulnerable amid booming tourism. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
