- Story Text: Family and friends paid tribute to Brazil's late soccer legend Carlos Alberto in Rio on Tuesday (October 25), remembering the man who has gone down in history as scoring on of the greatest goals in World Cup history while captaining Brazil to glory in the 1970 final against Italy.
He died 72 following a heart attack and for soccer-mad Brazil, the nation has been plunged into mourning.
Carlos Alberto was a classy defender who played for Fluminense, Santos, Flamengo and the Cosmos and earned the nickname 'The Captain' for his leadership qualities.
His football contemporaries have heralded his leadership as his lasting legacy.
"I think that all of the leadership he showed in what is considered one of the most talented teams in the history of soccer, which was the 1970 (soccer) team. I think that his leadership should be remembered by everyone of us. He goes down in history as one of the best players in world soccer," said soccer player, Ze Ricardo.
On retiring from the game Carlos Alberto worked as a commentator and brand ambassador, but will always be remembered for his leading role in the 1970 Brazil side, which is often referred to as the greatest soccer team of all time.
"Carlos Alberto was a father figure, a towering figure as captain of the team, who had a spectacular history in football and his simplicity in passing on his teachings to athletes," said former soccer player, Goncalves.
Tributes poured in from around the football world with soccer's governing body FIFA calling the defender a "born leader" and the Brazilian Football confederation declaring a minute's silence before this weekend's fixtures. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
