I tried to get a job in the private or public sectors, but I could not. I even paid money to get a job, but it did not work too. So, I got deeply depressed. The fact that my mother had a dog when I was a little child makes me love pet dogs. My mother had a Terrier Frisca, and though it died when it reached a certain age, I could not forget it. So, when my mother asked me what I want to do to overcome my depression I told her that I have saved some money and I want to buy a dog. She helped me buy a dog and I bought a Frisca, which is the mother dog now and after that I bought male and female dogs and then I started to mate, breed, raise and sell." Some of them travel abroad on their holidays and they need someone to care for their dogs, and I can receive these dogs and take care of them. It has happened and I looked after dogs of other people. - Story Text: Iraqi dog breeder Diyar Nafi started out trying to alleviate her depression, and ended with a growing business.
Diyar was feeling low about her inability to find a job, so she bought a puppy to make her feel better.
She now breeds the animals for a living and offers caretaking services for other dogs.
"When my mother asked me what I want to do to overcome my depression I told her that I have saved some money and I want to buy a dog. She helped me buy a dog and I bought a Frisca, which is the mother dog now and after that I bought male and female dogs and then I started to mate, breed, raise and sell (them)," said Diyar, surrounded in her bedroom by her dogs.
The 28 year-old university graduate keeps her canines in her family home, where they sleep, eat and play in her bedroom on the second floor.
In less than a year her dogs have given birth to 25 puppies.
She promotes her dog sitting services on her Facebook page 'Diyar for Dogs' where she also advertises the sale of her pups.
"As for my business, I offer puppies for sale two months after birth when they stop drinking milk, by posting their pictures on my Facebook page; Diyar for dogs. My other source of money is services I offer to people who have pet dogs. Some of them travel abroad on their holidays and they need someone to care for their dogs, and I can receive these dogs and take care of them. It has happened and I looked after dogs of other people. I do not usually ask for much money. The payment includes cost of washing, feeding and keeping dogs and the efforts I make to care for them," she said.
Now Diyar is hoping her labour of love can turn into a long term success story, by expanding her business.
"My dream which I hope will come true, when I become financially able, is to open a centre or a big house for dogs comprising of kindergartens, an operation room - which I plan to open with the help of a veterinary physician - and bathrooms supplied with shampoos and hair driers so the dog looks completely different than when he first walked in. This is my life's dream," she said.
Diyar's dogs are sold for around 250-300 dollars, but she is happy to reduce the price if she feels the purchasing family will provide a good home for the pet.
Among the dogs that she breeds are Teriers, Pekingese, as well as Chihuahuas. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
