- Story Text:The 23rd annual Elle Women in Hollywood Awards offered up an appropriate mix of thoughtful reflection, optimism and a desire for continued progress in the fight for gender equality.
The elegant event took place on Monday evening (October 24) in Beverly Hills, where actresses Amy Adams, Kathy Bates, Felicity Jones, Helen Mirren and Lupita Nyong'o were among those recognized and honored for their contributions to film.
The timeliness of the awards were not missed amid the headlines generated by the current presidential race between Hillary Clinton and rival Donald Trump.
"I've been to these events before and it is a lot of fun to get women together to tell their stories about being in the industry," said Kathy Bates.
"The things that they faced, especially now during this election process where women have had some dirt kicked on them. It will be interesting to see what the young women say about that, if they talk about it at all," she added.
Actress Helen Mirren also believed that the opportunity to elect the country's first woman to the White House could send a very positive message.
"Of course there have been woman leaders in all sorts of countries, India, Pakistan, Israel, Britain and many others, Germany, obviously," said Mirren. "But, I think the power and the presence of America on the international stage on the world it will be really sending an amazing message if there is a female president. What a wonderful thing for all the young girls of America. That is who I think of."
The 2016 honorees, which also included Kristen Stewart and Aja Naomi King, will each be featured on individual November covers of ELLE magazine.
"There is always more work to be done, but I choose to focus on the positive," explained Amy Adams, on the importance of events like this. "There are so many wonderful women who are making great strides to create change and I think we need to focus on that. We really need to start hearing those voices because when women are perceived differently than we will be treated differently. So, let's change the perception."
