- Story Text: Some thousand students marched to Bogota's central plaza on Thursday (October 20) evening, demanding a swift solution to Colombia's halted peace process with Marxist insurgents.
"We are ready" and "Agreements now" read some of the signs carried by university students in the latest of a series of marches in the capital since the nation narrowly voted to reject a peace agreement signed by the government and Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
The government has since been meeting with representatives of the right wing opposition and others who campaigned against the deal in hopes the rebels will accept changes to the accord.
Student protester, Juliet Charri, said the movement was apolitical and focused on finding a solution.
"We aren't here for the ideology of any particular political party, we are neither left, right, nor centre, but students who want this situation to change for the thousands of victims who have suffered this nightmare and so the suffering does not continue for the next generations," said Charri.
"We all want to express a single word: 'peace'. We are demanding that our politicians put together an agreement once and for all that includes all sides, those who voted 'no', for their reasons, and those of us who voted 'yes'," added protest organiser, Juan Pablo Rubiano.
As the march progressed, President Juan Manuel Santos said in a televised address that several modifications to the peace deal suggested by the opposition are "inviable".
He added that he was committed to salvaging the accord, and will take some opposition suggestions for changes to the accord to FARC leaders. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
