- Story Text: Clare Hollingworth, the correspondent known for being the first person to report the start of World War II, turned 105 in Hong Kong on Monday (October 10).
The then 27-year-old, three days into her job at The Telegraph, was the first to report 1,000 German tanks amassing at the Polish border.
Flanked by family and friends, Hollingworth celebrated at the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents Club with cake and a publication of a new book by her great-nephew Patrick Garrett.
Garrett said his book 'Of Fortunes and War', uncovers previously unknown stories about his great aunt including tales about her helping refugees escape Poland during WWII.
Another great-nephew Andrew Flude said she never talked about her extraordinary life, but was always a force to be reckoned with.
"She was always game for anything as well. When I was I think about 25, I had a very small, quite unreliable microlight aircraft, two seats, two stroke engines, very basic. And I asked her one day; 'would you like to come and fly with me?' and she said 'yes, of course'. So I sat her in the back seat of this little microlight. I sat in the front seat, there is no electric starter, a pull-starter. So I got it started eventually and took her a flight around, I think she really loved it. At that time she was 80. That is the oldest lady, the oldest person I have ever taken up flying," he said, adding that at her 104th birthday her only wish was to live another year.
Born in 1911, she went on to work across Asia, including Vietnam and China in the early 1970s. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
