Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres thanked the United Nations Security Council for nominating him to be the next Secretary-General on Thursday (October 6) and vowed to tackle "enormous challenges" in the world affected by various conflicts.
"To describe what I feel at the moment two words are sufficient: gratitude and humility," he said in a short statement in Lisbon, which he repeated in various languages.
He also praised the current United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon, 72, of South Korea.
Ban will step down at the end of 2016 after serving two terms.
"Gratitude but also humility when facing the dramatic problems of today's world and humility that is needed to serve and especially to serve those that are most vulnerable, the victims of conflict, of terrorism, the victims of the violation of rights, the victims of poverty and the injustices of this world," said Guterres, 67. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
