- Story Text:The newly crowned Miss Venezuela said on Wednesday (October 6) that she did not agree with controversial U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump who has come under fire for his comments about the appearances of several women including beauty pageant winners.
Keysi Sayago, 22, who represented the state of Monagas, won the title at Venezuela's 64th national pageant and the right to represent her country at Miss Universe 2017. She was also crowned Miss Smiles and Miss Attitude, chosen from among 24 contestants.
"I do not share the opinions of that man (Donald Trump), I don't agree, however, we have to be tolerant and respect the opinion of each person a little bit," said Sayago.
Trump has come under fire by opposition candidate, Hilary Clinton, for making disparaging comments about women's physical appearance, including calling former beauty queen Alicia Machado's "Miss Piggy" after she gained weight following her Miss Universe win in 1996.
Sayago also commented on the political and economic crisis ravaging Venezuela, where the International Monetary Fund projected an inflation rate of 475 percent for 2016.
"With respect to the crisis in Venezuela, it affects us all, none of us have been saved from this, but we have tried to remain in a bubble because at the end of the day this is a beauty contest, and we had to keep up a good attitude throughout it, we could not allow ourselves to get swept up in all the bad things, on the contrary, this gave our country a reason to smile," said Sayago.
