- Summary: FARMVILLE, VIRGINIA, UNITED STATES (OCTOBER 4, 2016) (REUTERS) SHOT OF JOURNALISTS INSIDE "SPIN ALLEY" SHOT OF VIRGINIA SENATOR MARK WARNER SPEAKING TO JOURNALIST (SOUNDBITE) (English) VIRGINIA SENATOR MARK WARNER SAYING: "I think he laid out, with specifics, items around Hillary's plan to grow the economy, immigration reform, how we make sure to increase and strengthen our alliances, and I think the real key moment was when he repeatedly used Donald Trump's own words about how he describes women, Mexicans or Muslims or his own words on something as dangerous as nuclear proliferation and everytime Pence would not defend Trump's statements and just acted like Trump didn't say those things." WIDE OF "SPIN ALLEY", NAMES OF SUPPORTERS ON BLUE AND RED BANNERS (SOUNDBITE) (English) ALABAMA SENATOR JEFF SESSIONS SAYING: "I don't know what you mean praising - to say that he has been an effective leader for his people, that he has high popularity rating with his people is pretty accurate, so far as I can understand. So, he's been able to sustain his power, been able to frustrate Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and cause much discord around the world, when our interests aren't that different. It's really frustrating that we are at a point of this much divergence and danger in the world when we should be able to do better. This administration has failed - that's just plain fact." SHOT OF ROOM (SOUNDBITE) (English) JOHN PODESTA, CLINTON CAMPAIGN CHAIRMAN, SAYING: "It didn't feel like, to me, that there was anything in this debate tonight that would change the trajectory of the campaign because Mike Pence simply couldn't explain or defend what Donald Trump has said on the campaign trail and the hateful and divisive kind of campaign that he has run. I give Gov. Pence credit for a smooth performance, but everytime Tim Kaine was just quoting Donald Trump, he'd shake his head no. Well I am not sure what signal that sends - no that he didn't think the charge was unfair or no, that he didn't agree with Donald Trump." PAN OF ROOM (SOUNDBITE) (English) REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN MIKE POMPEO SAYING: "Look Tim Kaine was obsessed by it tonight. He was literally obsessed with Donald Trump's taxes. I think that's what you do when you are selling nothing to the American people, a tax policy that you know the American people will reject. I mean he talked about Donald Trump's taxes in the context of terrorism and that the list was endless. If you had Donald Trump's taxes in your drinking game tonight you're going to need a driver and so I hope that what you saw in that was a serious man who was talking about the things that really matter to America. MORE OF "SPIN ALLEY" (SOUNDBITE) (English) TRUMP CAMPAIGN MANAGER KELLYANNE CONWAY SAYING: "Mr. Trump, the Trump family have sacrificed enormously for him to take this case across the country, take this message the people and you saw tonight in his running mate, Governor Pence- his selection his judgment, his leadership in selecting Governor Pence- exactly how they going to do that. I think it was a very, very rough night for Tim Kaine and the Hillary Clinton ticket and a really great night for Mike Pence and our ticket." - Story Text: Following a spirited first debate between the vice presidential nominees Democrat Tim Kaine and Republican Mike Pence on Tuesday night (October 4), supporters from both sides claimed victory and appeared satisfied with their nominees' performance.
The debate between Kaine, the No. 2 to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, and his Republican rival, Mike Pence, was the only such encounter between the vice presidential contenders, and the two spent most of their time attacking each other's running mates.
"Mike Pence simply couldn't explain or defend what Donald Trump has said on the campaign trail and the hateful and divisive kind of campaign that he has run. I give Gov. Pence credit for a smooth performance, but everytime Tim Kaine was just quoting Donald Trump, he'd shake his head no. Well I am not sure what signal that sends - no, that he didn't think the charge was fair or no, that he didn't agree with Donald Trump." said Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta after the debate.
"I think the real key moment was when he repeatedly tried used Donald Trump's own words about how he describes women, Mexicans or Muslims or his own words on something as dangerous as nuclear proliferation and everytime Pence would not defend Trump's statements and just acted like Trump didn't say those things," said Virginia senator Mark Warner.
Pence called Russian President Vladimir Putin a "small and bullying leader" and condemned his actions in Syria on Tuesday, taking a harder line than Donald Trump. It was a departure from the frequent praise of Putin by Trump, who has called him a better leader than U.S. President Barack Obama and said he could work with him.
Senator Jeff Sessions denied that Trump and Pence differed in their approach towards Putin.
"To say that he (Putin) has been an effective leader for his people, that he has high popularity rating with his people is pretty accurate, so far as I can understand. So, he's been able to sustain his power, been able to frustrate Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and cause much discord around the world, when our interests aren't that different," Sessions said. "This administration has failed - that's just plain fact," he added.
The debate at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, was lively from the start as Kaine, honed in on Trump's refusal thus far to reveal his tax records, saying he had broken a promise to do so.
"Look Tim Kaine was obsessed by it tonight. He was literally obsessed with Donald Trump's taxes. I think that's what you do when you are selling nothing to the American people, a tax policy that you know the American people will reject," said Republican congressman Mike Pompeo.
A CNN/ORC snap poll declared Pence the winner with 48 percent support compared to Kaine's 42 percent.
It set the table for a second presidential debate looming on Sunday in St. Louis between Clinton and Trump, who needs to rebound from a rocky performance from his first debate, one that gave Clinton a boost in national opinion polls with Election Day only five weeks away on Nov. 8. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
