- Story Text: German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday (October 5) said the European Union and the United States should continue to negotiate the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) free trade deal as long as possible, despite opposition in many European countries.
"I am calling for continued talks on TTIP. Everyone who has negotiated a collective bargaining, everyone who has negotiated climate talks, knows that the most difficult agreements are usually reached at the end of a negotiation, and not at the beginning. Therefore it's the final result that counts," Merkel told a meeting of the German BGA trade body.
Merkel added the EU and the United States could write a new chapter in the history of globalisation with a successful deal.
Merkel also underlined during her speech that the European Union could not grant Britain full access to the EU's internal market if London did not accept the bloc's basic principle of free movement.
"We will lead no pre-negotiations. But we will say generally that full access to the internal market is coupled with accepting the four basic freedoms, and this includes the free movement of people," Merkel said.
She added that if the EU granted Britain any exceptions in negotiating access to the internal market, it would create an "extremely difficult situation" for the bloc. She did not elaborate. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
