- Story Text:A dog training facility in Egypt is helping owners deal with their pets' depression and aggressive behaviour.
At 'Africano Total Solution K9' academy in Cairo, trainers say they deal with many dogs that were insufficiently trained, which can cause problems and lead to behaviour disorders.
The training process starts with trainers gaining the trust of the dog, said the academy's founder, Alaa Samir.
"In the first week the dog goes out with the trainer, who plays with them, pets them, the dog will eat from his hand and then get to know all the other trainers. Then we start to observe the dog's strengths and weaknesses to be able to mark some points as to what his training programme will be," said Samir.
It's important to treat the dogs with love and care before teaching them new behaviours, he added.
"After completing the first phase, we assess the positive and negative behaviours, and from there we try to increase the positives while decreasing the negatives. Then we start giving the dog his orders using rewards, and that's the difference between the different styles of training," said Samir.
The duration of each dog's training depends on the severity of the problem, with some dog owners using the facility for up to a year.
According to trainers, many inexperienced pet owners do not train their dogs sufficiently when they are puppies, as some fail to research on the different dog breeds and their individual needs. This can then lead to unhappy and aggressive pets, they say.
The academy also observes owners interacting with their pets to ascertain any problems.
"There are some dogs with a really bad attitude so they came here, and they leave entirely different. My problem with my dog is that she's very hyper, she has a lot of energy. She gives me a lot of trouble at home, I have difficulty communicating in her way. I try, but with no luck," dog owner Mahmoud Mostafa said.
Another client, dog owner Rania, said that she uses the academy to train her pet to become a proper guard dog.
"As long as the dog gets trained to become a security dog, which then becomes its natural state. That is personal security for me and my home, it's very normal to have a security dog, and that's why I have to train him," Rania said.
The academy, which opened in 2010, employs skilled trainers who have taken specialist courses in animal behaviour and dog training. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
